Rebirth: Leading Families to Survive in the Apocalypse

Chapter 108 - 108 Camping Barbecue

Chapter 108: Chapter 108 Camping Barbecue

Before nightfall, the group had already driven out of D Province.

Now they were on the edge of A Province, and after passing through A Province, they would reach S City.

With its high mountains and complicated terrain, A Province was not easy to navigate. Su Jin sighed as she watched the night begin to fall. They had been so focused on leaving D Province quickly that they had arrived in this place with no villages in front and no shops behind, fearing that they would have to camp outside tonight.

Camping?

Mao Qiqi’s eyes lit up at the thought. She had often seen camping scenes in cartoons and now she finally had the chance to experience it for herself.

Lin Xiuyuan was just as excited as she was. He had never camped before in his life. Tents, sleeping bags, barbecue—here he came!

They found a relatively open and flat area by the side of the road. This place was so remote that probably very few people had passed by even before the Apocalypse, let alone zombies now. Moreover, Mao Qiqi had confirmed that there were no dangers nearby.

Su Jin took out the tents, moisture-proof mats, sleeping bags, and other items she had bought from her space. Xue Wanyi was especially familiar with these items, and he set up two tents in no time at all.

“This, this can actually expand and turn into a house?”

Nie Qing walked around the tent that Xue Wanyi had set up, circle after circle. The people from the plains were truly ingenious to have such convenient items.

“Master Nie, have you never used a tent before?” Xue Wanyi looked at Nie Qing, who was as curious as a child, and found the elder somehow endearingly naive.

“No, I used to live on the mountain. When I was outside, I would just rough it and sleep directly on the trees,” Nie Qing discovered that the tents even came with breathable windows. Sitting on the moisture-proof mat that Big Beard had laid out, he no longer felt the dampness of the grass underneath.

As Xue Wanyi assembled the tents, he shared with Nie Qing the places he had visited, the items he had used, and the adventures he had experienced during the time he became fascinated with outdoor exploration. Nie Qing listened intently, not expecting Big Beard to be an adventurer who roamed the world.

The rest of the people also helped out, laying moisture-proof mats, placing sleeping bags…

In a short while, six neat and orderly tents were set up by everyone. The six tents formed a circle, which was both safe and space-saving. In the middle, there was plenty of room for everyone to eat and sit and chat.

Finally, at Lin Xiuyuan’s insistence, they prepared barbecue for tonight’s dinner.

Su Jin did not object; her space contained many ready-to-use meats and vegetables pre-cut by her grandpa. These were prepared during his free time so that when cooking, whatever they wanted to use would be readily available. They also served as a convenience for Su Jin and the others in case they needed to cook outside.

Guo Yang felt as if his eyes would be blinded by the sight of the fresh lamb, beef, and pork belly Su Jin was taking out from her space, dish after dish.

“My space can keep food fresh,” Su Jin said upon seeing the astonishment of the others, explaining.

“So that’s it! I was wondering why our meals are always hot; it turns out you guys prepare them in advance and put them in there,” one of them said.

Their doubts were finally resolved; Su Jin’s space was really convenient. They wouldn’t even need a refrigerator in the future.

“God, little sister, your space is so amazing. You can’t casually let others know about it in the future,” Guo Yang quickly cautioned.

“Yeah, sister-in-law, you can’t let others find out about it. What if everyone starts putting stuff in your space to keep it fresh? It would be so inconvenient if your space got stuffed!” Shi Jin summarized.

“So in your eyes, my space is just a public fridge?” Su Jin joked.

“I think Shitou makes sense. If others find out and want the stuff inside,” Yin Chengtian also voiced his concerns.

“Got it. Go grill the meat, I’m really hungry,” Su Jin said with a laugh, urging them on.

Look, she had no need to worry about these people revealing her space. After all, it pertained to their future food supply.

For the first time, Lu Guanhai felt that his fire had some use: lighting charcoal.

They were making charcoal-grilled barbecue, which couldn’t be too hot or it would burn the meat. Lu Hao’s fire seemed too intense—a small pile of charcoal quickly turned into gray ash, let alone being suitable for barbecuing.

Finally, Lu Guanhai found a bit of confidence. Even though his Special Ability Fire wasn’t great in combat, it could still be used for barbecuing!

Not until they had tasty grilled meat did the group unanimously decide they must keep Su Jin’s space a secret, considering their future gastronomic pleasure!

There were plenty of ingredients in Su Jin’s space, enough for a dozen people to feast on barbecue until they were full. The fresh meat was so delicious; even the meat they had eaten at barbecue restaurants before wasn’t as good. After eating, they felt refreshed as though the fatigue from the day had disappeared.

The family knew it was because the food from the space had a trace of Spiritual Power, which could not only replenish their Special Abilities but could also restore their physical strength. However, they just smiled without speaking; there was no need for words, after all.

“Su Jin, let me take the night watch today,” Lin Xiuyuan offered himself up.

“You? Not reliable,” Su Jin shook her head. She still remembered the time in the warehouse when Lin Xiuyuan, who said he would keep watch, fell asleep halfway through.

“I… I promise I won’t fall asleep this time,” Lin Xiuyuan assured, although he still felt a bit guilty. But he had rested for a long time in the space today and was sure he wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.

In fact, when it came to keeping watch at night, the family felt no pressure. They only needed to spend a little time in the space to be fully rested; there was no need to worry about overexertion. But both Yin Chengtian and Shi Jin said they would keep watch, and finally, after a discussion, they decided that Lin Xiuyuan, Yin Chengtian, and Shi Jin would take turns standing guard.

Turned out the three of them said they would keep watch, but they ended up talking all night. Su Jin even kindly provided watermelon seeds, peanuts, and mineral water so the three men chatted about everything from before the Apocalypse to the present and even the future survival of humanity. In the end, they all agreed that Su Jin and Lu Hao were like their second parents. If not for the two of them, they might have already…

“Ah, stop thinking so much. We’re heading to S city for our bright future,” Lin Xiuyuan interrupted their thoughts.

“Right, right, I’ve been to S city too before the Apocalypse—it was a special economic zone, very well-developed. Just not sure how it is now,” Yin Chengtian reminisced.

“Heh, who cares what it’s like now? We’re there to get a head start anyway; we’ll stake out more territory when the time comes,” Shi Jin declared.

“That’s a must…”

Lin Xiuyuan was full of expectations for the S city mentioned by Su Jin. Only through chatting with others did he realize that in just a short month, he had gone from a stressed high-school senior to an Ice-Element Ability User surviving the Apocalypse. Life truly changes in the blink of an eye!
